Making a Kite (Sled)

06 October 2006

Resources

  1. Design of the kite (see http://home.swipnet.se/~w-14856/drakar/sledeng.htm)

  2. Two pieces of cane, acting as kite backbone,

  3. Sheets of Coloured Paper (depending on the size of kite)

  4. Working material : scicors, glue, tape, ruler, pencils, long string

Method: A step by step method of how the craft was done

  1. Draw a blue print of the kite on the coloured sheet of paper with the pencil.

  2. Cut out the extra parts of the kite off the sheet of paper

  3. attach the cane sticks to the kite

  4. tails. Make tails from the coloured paper left-overs

  5. Attach string to the sides of the kite

  6. Have a lot of fun

General Note : The craft was spread over two session. One predominatly to build the kite, the second to attach the tail, strings, final adjustments and fly the kite.

Results: Children were very excited and motivated to do the kite. Thus they were more ready to obey the volunteers’ orders to behave since they would otherwise be punished by not being allowed to do the kite.

Most of the children’s kite flew pretty well due to a good winds. Children enjoyed the craft and begged us to repeat the task.

Children who perform well in school found the craft very interesting since they applied skills they have learned in school in making the craft such as measuring, cutting wood and coloured paper. Other children needed much more help than others.

Nonetheless, all children, despite abilities, had a kite.

Improvements: None that I generally remember. Except that :

  1. Strings could have been longer than 10 meters.

  2. More than one person should go with the children to fly the kite

  3. Prepare a lot of tape for damages.
