Christmas Wreath

19 December 2007

Christmas Wreath

Targeted Children: 5-10

Materials used: Green, Red, Purple, Pink and Orange Crepe paper, PVA glue, large paper plates, scissors, tissue paper rolls.

Method:

Cut 60 4 x 4 inch squares of green crepe paper and 15 squares of red crepe paper.

Cut 3 6 x 7 inch squares of purple crepe paper and 1 squares of pink crepe paper for the candles.

Roll each of the green and red crepe paper into tiny balls. These represented the wreath ‘flowers.’

Stick rows of green balls (about 3 in each row) onto the rim of the plate. After 6 rows of green crepe paper, stick one row of red crepe paper.

Wrap the purple and pink crepe paper around the tissue paper rolls. Cut a ‘flame’ of orange crepe paper and place around half a cm of glue on one side of the ‘flame’ and place it within the roll. Do the same for the rest of the rolls.

At the other end of each ‘candle’ place a little glue and stick to the plate.

Result:

We presented an example of the craft to the children together with a real wreath and explained its significance. The children worked alone but each was accompanied by a volunteer.
Although it was projected that the process of creating the ‘flowers’ would be a bit time-consuming, it turned out for the better because it created a little friendly competition between the children to finish quicker.
It was probably the novelty of the craft and the fact that it consisted a lot of different steps to carry out which made it more enjoyable to the children.
